A Postcard from Budapest

I’m sending you this postcard from Budapest, at the start of my week’s holiday in Hungary. We spent yesterday seeing something of the city, not so much with any set plan to see all the sites, but choosing a couple of things and then going with the flow.

Palatinus Strand on Margaret Island, Budapest

Our main destination was Margaret island, a large, green  island in the middle of the Danube where we headed for the large Palatinus Strand complex of swimming baths. This was a bit of a compromise between a visit to one of the many traditional spa baths such as the well known Gellert Baths that I’d have liked to try, and the new Aquapark on the edge of town where the children would have preferred to spend the day.

We had a happy few hours trying out all the different temperature pools, jets and water slides at the Palatinus Baths and then spent the afternoon jumping off and on trams, dodging rain showers in the Central Market and trying to get into museums that are closed on Mondays. The best decision we made was to buy a 24 hr travel pass so that we could use any passing tram that took our fancy without worrying about whether it was the right one.

The day in Budapest is really a little bonus, as our main holiday plans are centred around Lake Balaton, a large inland lake and holiday area where we’ll be heading today.

Wish you were here!
